Seven things you may not know about me

I have been challenged to write seven things about myself. In order to succeed I can only write information people may not know about me and information that I have not blogged about previously. It really is not as easy to do this as it might sound. If you doubt that, try jotting down 7 interesting tidbits about yourself on a piece of paper. Done? Aha, see? the cringe factor is enormous!

The taskmaster is Mommy To Two Boys . My partner in crime is Tazzy. She was tagged at the same time and has completed the challenge with grace and style. Lets get started.

1. I grew up on a farm in Tipperary. Our house was halfway up the side of a mountain, cold, damp and miserable. The year my youngest sister was born we were snowed in for almost a month. The inside walls of the house froze as we had no central heating. That entire winter the new baby slept in her crib under an infrared lamp to keep her warm. The lamp used was one borrowed from the farm as they were used to keep the calves warm after birth. We loved the farm and played in the milking parlour a lot (when it was cow free). My Dad was always very conscious of farm safety though and certain areas were off limits. To this day there are parts of the farm I do not remember as we moved when I was 11, before I was old enough to go to these areas.

2. I worked in a bank for many years. This is not a popular profession at the moment so I will assure you I am writing under an assumed name and have been undercover for almost 3 years now! While I was there I really enjoyed it. I don't miss it though (current economic climate aside) as I love being an SAHM.

3. I am highly, highly, pedantically boringly organised. I learned this extreme behaviour during my banking years, you cannot be disorganised with money belonging to other people! It is a handy trait. Where is the receipt for the xyz we purchased last year? Tax return for 1999? . That kind of organised. Paperwork is a joy for me (and I LOVE paperclips)................and I get to file it away afterwards! You should see my sons PECS and reports, but I don't think I am allowed talk about that, sorry.

4. 6 weeks after I met my husband, we decided we would get married. We didn't worry people by telling them of our decision straight away, after all it was quick. We saved our money for a few months and then dropped it on them the day we bought our house (along with that news too). To this day we are both quick decision makers (houses, cars, children) and never once have we ever regretted any of our 'quick' decisions.

5. At age 8 I had a reading age of 12. I burned a hole in my parents pockets trying to keep myself in books. I read voraciously (remember, we lived on an isolated farm with hard winters). By 12 I had grown out of my mother screening 'grown up' books for suitability because we had moved to a town that had the most wonderful library you ever saw. I discovered history and science. These remain my favourite subjects. Unfortunately I do not read these days, I cannot allow myself the time because I become to engrossed, but the books are waiting patiently for me. Eh, no, sorry, I am not a brainbox, I just got into reading early!!

6. In the early days of marriage I took the term 'wife' seriously, oh, probably for about 2 months until the 'I am so grown up' feeling wore off. This was a period when 'time' was something to be squandered with reckless abandon, not the precious commodity it is now. Back then I spent happy weekend days cooking and freezing dinners for the weeks ahead. This is leading up to a point which definitely qualifies for 'cringe factor'. I used to make Shepherds Pies in individual containers for the freezer. I would make 8 and we would have them once a week for the next 4 weeks. The cringy bit is that I used to write little messages on the ones for my husband, on the potato topping, such as 'I ♥ U'.

7. The strangest conversation I ever had in my entire life took place on 21st January 2007 with my son, aged 4 years 10 months at the time. He asked 'Mam, when is my little brother coming?'. This took me very much by surprise, he had not mentioned before that he wanted a sibling and there wasn't one on the horizon either. I explained that Holy God would give us a baby when he was ready. We chatted about this for a short while but he became increasingly upset and agitated. I decided to end the coversation because he was so heartbroken and said 'It will happen when Holy God decides to put a baby in my tummy'. His reply 'But Mam, he's already there'. I was devastated for him, this little brother idea seemed to come out of nowhere and I was fairly sure I had not dealt with it properly if he was this upset. Later that day, I noticed the date........................recalled my sons statement.................ran to the shop. Yes, unbelievably, HRH was born a little over 8 months later (one week late, gggrrrrr).

Tazzy and I are now passing on this challenge to all who are willing to take it on. Interested?

Hi Jen, totally get the organised bit - couldn't survive without my lever arch folders - but never did the Shepherd's Pie thing, was clearly v bad wife!

Taz said...

Jen, this is only brilliant!! And to be honest - not much of it surprised me!!! Except the shepherd pie thing! I've always imagined you as being highly organised and decisive! What a cool story about No.1 son! Think everyone should do one of these! xx

Wow Jen, I'm now a bit scared of you....lol. I wish I was more organised but sadly will never be. I put things aside to file away 'later' and hubbie puts them in a drawer or a spare envelope lying around and never see said items again. I also love the story of No1 son. Wowser!!!...

I am banning my husband from reading this post in case he runs away with you!
I would love to be really organised and make great pretentions at it...but things get covered in spag bol/poo/shiraz etc etc (literally as well as figuratively).
What a fun post...I feel like I getting to know you a little bit more...any shepherds pie lurking at the bottom of your freezer???

Ah, just to clarify, my ability to organise does not extend to housework, it just doesn't do it for me the same way paperwork does!

Hammie said...

wow - that kid should be in a Stephen King book. Which you won't read because you don't have the time.
Tick on the early reading age. Tick on the unsuitable books from the mobile library. And I read some REAL eye openers before the age of 12! (including Jaws, HA) Tick on the paperwork thing too. In this country if you are good at paperwork you will go far. You just have to see it through.

so I guess that spooky baby that implanted itself in your tummy chose wisely. (Google Graeme Greene and the Midwich Cuckoos)

I was laughing so loud out loud when you wrote me that it was causing your brain to go into overdrive to think of these 7 things! You crack me up!!!

The recollection of your winters is crazy. How old were you when you sister was born? What a scary and real memory to have. I was picturing Little House (Ha).

And I can say that I have never made food with the words I love you in it. Kudos!

We just watched a horror movie called UnBorn and now I am sitting at the computer scared because your story is eerily similar to the story line. Very freaky...

Gawd missus, can you come organise me and do my paperwork? I hate the damn stuff lol. LMAO at the shepherds pie messages hehe xx

Jen said...

@MommyToTwoBoys, I was 8 that winter, don't remember it being a big deal, my Mum did all the worrying I expect lol. @Petunia, oh yes please, if you mind my kids. I will even bring my own paperclips lol. Thanks for commenting everyone, I was surprised how much I enjoyed doing this (after the initial eek moment) and I am really enjoying reading everyone elses too:) I am not at all scary, honest (if you disagree I will come after you with my paperclips and shepherds pies to prove it!!) Holy, moly! You are organized. There is nothing wrong with that. I love that you are still together with your husband even though you had a quick start.

Ellen Arnison said...

The quick decisions are always the best somehow and isn't it funny what kids 'know' if you listen to them properly?

Lynn said...

OK, the last one is just freaky. Wow. Interesting that you can be both totally, anally organized and yet make snap decisions. Those two things don't usually to together, but it looks like it's worked out for you!

LinzW1976 said...

We also decided to get married within 6 weeks of meeting! I'm not normally one for such quick decisions but it seems to have paid off! x

Emma said...

Great post, I also love organizing paperwork, I have a huge love of lists too! I'm with you on the reading thing too, was always ahead at school with reading, don't read as much now though, always messing around on internet too much!

Gosh - I would find it hard to say 7 things no-one knew about me. I am a bit too free with the personal stuff! I was a qualified soccer ref for a bit, a nurse for 10 months and spent my teens wanting to marry Melvyn Bragg. I think that is quite enough! Great idea - and I love Blog gems x

Um, wow on point 7. How amazing. And I loved your snippets about growing up in Tipperary. Feel like I know you a bit better now. :-)

Oh my goodness - that conversation with your son gave me goosebumps!! Children are just so intuitive and they are more in touch with us than we are with ourselves.

Just catching up on some reading and wandered over here :)
I live on the side of a mountain (we call hills mountains, it's a Leitrim thing) and we are a bit snowed in but only just, if the sun keeps shining today i think we will make it down to town. We are v well stocked up on food and fuel so it's grand.
I was a mad reader too and also tend to become completely lost in books so I don't read v often these days, Christmas has always been a reading time for me so looking forward to that.
Luckily my parents didn't censor our reading as much they did TV (go to bed, you are too young to watch this - but my brothers are staying up - never mind your brothers and go to bed)
I remember one day that my brother's friend's dad came to the house to complain that the book Jaws was openly on the bookshelf and should not be available to young teens. Ahh, the 70's......

Wow Jen it is so amazing to find out so much stuff about you. No wonder you are the wonderful person you are. Thanks for this great idea. Sorry I didn't follow the correct pattern but I added a post that I did back in November xxxxxx

Hahahaha...I loved reading this again! I'd love a follow-up tho...I am especially interested in knowing what you would write on your husband's shepherd's pies these days (put out the bins/pick up your own jocks/only fart downwind of me???). Maybe that's just me XXX

how i loved reading this about you
I am the same with voracious reading
I obsessively read everything I could get my hands on
Wish I was organised like you
DH and I are quick decision makers like you and your DH about all big things ( marriage, house etc ) but we debate endlessly about the small things - the DVD to rent on a weekend , low fat - regular fat - bread

spectrummymummy said...

How spookily intuitive of your first born! That is amazing. We're speedy decision makers too, which usually works out for the best...but not always.

Chris P-M said...

I only WISH I could be an organizer. Good for you! My hubby and I are quick decision makers too....we're kind of regretting the decision we made to buy the house we're currently in. Ah well. Too late!
