I am a Duck!

So our family Doctor tells me!

We had a visit to our Doctor on Friday as Her Cuteness was unwell. While we were there he was asking about HRH. I gave him an update on progress, appointments and therapies.

That's when he gave me the 'You are a duck' line. He explained that I appear so calm and collected on the surface, but underneath I am paddling furiously.

This idea really tickled me and I thought I would share it, maybe even indulge in a bit of metaphor stretching deep thinking! You see, I think the majority of parents fall into this category, special needs children or not, one or more children, mothers working inside or outside the home, single parents etc. Every parent will experience a period of frantic paddling, likewise we will have times where it seems easier and a gentle push will keep us going.

I looked up the collective noun for a group of swimming ducks. The words are 'Raft' and 'Team'.

When I think of 'raft' I immediately think of a life raft. When I think of 'team' I think of lots of people working towards something, together. So, if I am a duck I need my 'raft' or my 'team'. Well I am a lucky little duck because I have supportive family and friends who can act in either role.

If you are a duck go and find other ducks who are paddling for the same reason. You can be sure that you are not the only one. Find some parenting forums to begin with or track down other parents in similar situations and help each other out. Great friendships can come about this way.

If you are a duck who has a child with Autism you might consider this Facebook support group (Tiem Irishautismaction). This group has been a huge part of my support network since my son was diagnosed. There is a wealth of kindness, knowledge and support available too everyone and it all comes from other parents sharing their experience. I mention this issue specifically because it is such a big part of my life.

I hope the metaphor made you smile. It made me laugh, but it will also work. I won't forget it and maybe I will remember to check how fast I am paddling sometimes, see if I can slow down a little.

Any ducks out there willing to stand up and be counted?

End of metaphor, I promise.

To stretch the metaphor further "If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and sounds like a duck... then it is a duck". Quack!

You're quackers hehe... I'm a duck too and happy to be floating along with the rest of the raft. If enough of us going the same direction, we won't need to paddle as hard! (well in theory!) xxx

@Truf, quite probably I waddle like a duck, but can't say about the 'looks like a duck' bit. I get you though, I have heard that saying before, in relation to our children. It always worked for me:)

@Petunia, 'I'm quackers', ack, that would have been a great title, I should have emailed you before I posted.

@lastofthemojitos - noooo, don't stop lol

I forgot that I would be in for a line of ducky jokes lol. Thanks for the comments everyone, nice to know we are all quackers together:) Now all we need is some cool sunglasses like in the photo!!

I like that...a duck. And I love the picture you found with all the ducks. You are correct, the more support and team we have the easier it is on us and our children.

Just wanted to pop up here too and join the list of ducks! I saw you popped over to my blog and commented on my recent post about working (or not working) - and just wanted to say that I think the day I wrote about is an excellent example of ducking. My boss, when we're training new tutors, often uses the duck analogy when we're watching videos of me running ABA programmes. And it's the same if I'm working at home - to all intents and purposes we're having a fun day, playing games and going for walks, but underneath, my little duck legs are throwing ABA programmes out left, right and centre - working on turn-taking, sharing, money, counting and 'fairness' while playing Monopoly; conversation skills, safe and dangerous, types of cars and using money while walking and shopping; and miscellaneous other programmes all throughout the day. I think that's why I love what I do so much - everything is an opportunity for learning or generalisation, and the children just think they're playing. So everyone's happy ;)

Love it! Must admit I never pulled off the calm on the surface thing, lol. Always looked stressed, but I think that is the drama queen side of me.
