Recently an acquaintance of mine fell around laughing at me when I was trying to explain how exciting it is for us when HRH tries to say a word. To make the point, I explained to her that the first time HRH ever says a swear word I will probably jump for joy, because after all, it is a word and he is speaking. I wasn't joking, really, I wasn't! This is just how much of a big deal it is when he attempts or uses words.
HRH handed me the above sentence today. It reads 'I want to eat the slide'. Just ignore the glaringly obvious error for now and wait for the good bit. Usually he hands me the sentence and as he points to the symbols I say the words. But today he said the words himself:
"I wa..............et...............sly."
A whole sentence, he attempted each word as he pointed to the symbols. We cheered and made such a big deal of this (as you do) that he did it again. He spoke a sentence. Believe me, if it was possible to eat the slide I would have let him do it.
Ok, technically, somehow it matters that he used the wrong verb. But right now I don't care! It is such a big deal that he tried to do it on his own, that is more than enough for one day. After all, when a 2.5 year old little boy with autism, who cannot talk yet, tries this hard, well what is a parent to do only be ecstatic.
This probably means that I will have to be a bit more careful about the occasional 'colourful' words I use!

Well done HRH. He is really coming along great! I can teach you a lot more French swear words if you want ;-)
Woohoo! Big round of applause for HRH! I used to look after a 5 year old boy with autism and I'll never forget the first time I heard him speak - he was tracing out some letters on a road name sign and he loved the 'k' - he stopped as soon as he noticed I was paying attention though.
Yeah HRH!! That is wonderful news and deserves a party! He did an amazing job.
LOL-so wondering why he wants to eat the slide.
Great job for him and you!
Wow, well done to HRH! How exciting.
BRILLIANT!!! Well done HRH :D
Excellent! Brilliant stuff HRH!
:D
Wow, what a big step!
that's such good news! as the the content, you may yet discover that it makes perfect sense, children are so much better than us at getting their point across.
it won't be long till the day comes when he drops something or trips and says "oh bugger". :D
A big day for HRH. Brilliant, wonderful ... it's like music to the ears, isn't it? I hope it's the breakthrough you've been waiting for xxx
I am so happy for you, this is wonderful and he is still so little.
I have no doubt you will get all the words you want and loads of them :)
I am so excited for you!!!! What a giant leap. All bow before HRH!

Absolutely fantastic, delighted for you both. This reminds me of my mum when Kyle was first diagnosed, she used to say to me even if he curses do not correct him because he is speaking and that is precious, this came from a woman who hates cursing lol. Unfortunately that comes at a price and now his favourite words are Jesus Christ and Bollix!!
@Andra & Catlady, lol, and what good expressive words they are too!!
@Foodie, I will trade you and teach you how to swear 'as gaeilge' :)
@Jean & Borgerour, still very excited here, he tried again today with a little push from me. hehe, he will probably regret making the effort by the time I am done with getting him to keep trying :D
@Susie, no idea whether he wanted to eat something or play with the slide and just got confused and mixed the requests together, maybe :)
@Jomica, I hope so, I think we are definitely edging towards it. Def dawing on him that speech is good :)
@fran, Insomniac, Photopuddle, TheHenrys, Nickie, Isadora, thanks, it is such a big deal it is hard to explain, thanks for taking the time to join in the excitement:)

It's absolutely amazing news and I am so delighted for you and HRH! big hugs!!
great news and well done to ye all, the first step the biggest i bet he be reading you the dictionary in no time.
The King rocks - and he is only 2 and a half, the whole English language is there for him to conquer (and, it seems, French and Gaeilge are lined up).
This is so exciting and amazing!! Well done HRH! I don't know why but this sentence reminds me of my friend who is a teacher (of english as a foreign language) when one of her students insisted in class one day 'I vont to valk on the bitch' appalled my friend got really stunned until she realised he meant 'I want to walk on the beach!'
Yay HRH!! Well done little man! :) x
To add a little story - my MIL (who is not aware her grandson has ASD, bless her) told me my husband wouldn't speak until he was 2, and then one day he came up with a 3-word sentence. Rings a bell, doesn't it?
I LOVE LOVE LOVE your writing!
THat's so awesome. Well done HRH.
And STOP CURSING! lol
Well done all of you, such a special moment. Keep up the good work HRH!
What a huge step for your little man! A proud mammy moment in its glory and rightly so :D xx
I am delighted for you and really so impressed at how quickly he is verbalising.
But ditch the verb. This is what every teacher does with pecs - uses it to teach correct grammer and sentence structure and when I was developing Grace I got asked for "watch" for TV and "To Go" for toilet etc.
But hey, you don't sit on a TV and you don't eat a toilet (or a slide)
So: I Want Slide is good enough. Ditch the verbs until his discrimination improves and you really need them. For something that actually has 2 uses.
Thinking, thinking thinking. Nup! xx
Good for him for making a sentence. You should be proud! And one of Jaylen's first phrases was "god dammit." He said it ALL the time. Just walked around the house saying it. And he used it at school and like you said, they were happy. At least he was talking and they said he used it in context often. Like when his blocks fell.
