Keep your shorts ON!!

Well, I don't shout it, it's more of a strong hiss at HRH. But really, it is not that he wants to be naked. No, he is a 'must have clothes on at all times regardless of the heat' type of child. It would seem children on the spectrum are one or the other, they either prefer being naked or prefer too many clothes. HRH is the latter, no doubt aboout it.

So why is he pulling his shorts down? because they are short! He hunkers down, grabs at the ends of them and keeps pulling to try and get the shorts to cover his ankles, as all trousers should. Yep, he ends up covering his ankles alright! So I pull them up and it starts all over again. He even walks around in a kind of crouched waddle, complaining and tugging as he walks. At least I know he has good balance!

I have decided to give up. I am going shopping at the weekend and I am going to buy him several sets of the cheapest, lightest pyjamas that I can find. They will keep him covered up, as he requires. It will also prevent the daily 'battle of the suncream'. There is never a clear winner in this battle and I just worry all the time, especially with this very 'unIrish' hot weather. So, light, long legged and long armed pyjamas it will be.

So if you see the strange lady, who is obviously too lazy to dress her very happy toddler, it is just me. Come over and say hi..............please?

Lol. We had exactly the same problem. This week for the first time in years max put on a pair of shorts. Also till a few weeks ago every Saturday he insisted on wearing his pjs under his clothes so he could get comfortable wherever we went.

Ha ha ha, well Noelie is pulling all her dresses over her head to play peep at the moment so a lot of nappies / knickers on show at the moment too!

Perfect solution! In fact, I might try it myself... I hate applying sun-cream and all my clothes are too hot.

It's a Mummys Life said...

Of course I would! I'll be the one with the toddler with no clothes on. She's a definate clothes off sort of child.

I must look out for you! Kids are funny - I read something similar on another blog recently about when she put shorts on her son, he started asking 'where were the rest of them?'
I've a feeling I'm going to have a 'clothes-off' kind of lady....

I have to say we dont have that problem anymore but we have had a lot of clothes related problems, but I have learnt a lot of tricks.
Some of the shops do those lovely light long kind of Australian beach wear clothes for kids, might work for you - Tkmax and the discount sports shops, might work for you

Hate suncream battles, logic doesn't seem to work and brute force lets me down. Go with the pj's, great idea and they will cover his ankles!

We have a problem at the other end of shorts, trousers, whatever... Max has found his willy, and my GOD he will do anything he can to touch it and whip it out!

If you find anywhere online that I can buy baby grow type vests for 3 yr olds please let me know!! ;)

Ingenious!
bob has taken quite a liking to nudism lately. This is new, and I suspect it's more heat-related than anything. Streaking 6 yr olds are one thing....I just really REALLY hope he grows out of it before puberty!!!!

Well we have both extremes in this house, Kyle goes round with not a stitch on him and Lauren actually puts her winter coat on in the summer when its sweltering!! I give up lol

I'd say no-one will notice .. some of the boy's pjs are almost the same as day clothes, just a bit softer and looser. My boy is completely contrary and veers from one extreme to another. He went to school fully clothed today including vest and winter coast with hood up. Came home and stripped to undies for rest of day!

@Sandrine, aaww, pj's under the clothes, that is cute (it will happen in this house at some point).

@Foodie, my 16 month old always has her clothes over her head as is fascinated with her belly!!

@Dottrel, see I fix things for adults too :)

@MummysLife right, coffee and we can be called the odd couple :D

@Musings, you live so near that you really could see us lol, but forewarned is forearmed :)

@Brigid, thanks for that, always good to have an excuse to visit TKMaxx!

@Fran, yep, doesn't like his ankles, don't know how we are getting away with no socks!

@Marylin, I can post some over to you, no problem, they are plentiful in this country!

@Jean ouch, yes, um, worrying mental pic there!

@Andra eek, think of the wealth of experience you have now though :D I wonder if our kids don't feel the heat the same way? HRH has wet hair and he just doesn't seem to notice being too warm!

@BlueSky yep, I should get away with the pj's easily enough if I am careful about what I buy, but not leaving the shop without them so I will take whatever they have! Wow re himself, both in one day??!!

Thanks for the comments.

fab solution then everyone happy all round. I would still talk to you - different fashions for different people

Jen, I'm here laughing at the thoughts of HRH trying to cover his ankles and trying to make the legs of his shorts longer cos they should be. We don't seem to be having the same problem yet but his hand is definitely straying down the front of his shorts to have a little explore now that he has no buttoned vests to get in his way!!!

Oh Jen, I SO hear you!
We are in the heart of a very cold winter here and my little autie refuses to wear coats or jumpers at at all.
I worry that he'll freeze but it's much easier than constantly fighting with him *sigh*

Oh I've been there..from what I've experienced and heard it does get better..my nine year old occasionally still has issues with short sleeved shirts-trying to pull the sleeves down to his wrists...My 11 year old used to insist on snow-pants in the spring...this morning my 4 year old met me wearing nothing but swim goggles..which is a change as her usual fashion statement is wearing just one sock(the left one). I am hoping she outgrows this by the time she is 16.. So if I see you with a pajama clad boy..I will say hi as long as you wave back at me and my naked but for goggles wearing girl..:)

I can just picture a little boy running around pulling his shorts down and the surprise when they don't cover his ankles, v funny! You can get lovely pj's these days, they won't even look like pj's. In fact, you will probably look like a very sensible Mum for having your child covered up from the sun!!

Paula said...

LOL, that is such a funny image! I will indeed look out for you, although the chances are if I think I spot you it really will be someone who couldn't be bothered to get their child dressed - and how embarrassed will I be?! x

geeky said...

My kids call it "sunscream". Need I say more?!

Jen said...

@Jane, thank you :)

@Elaine, meet Marylin, @Marylin, meet Elaine. You two chat amongst yourselves :D

@Fiona, is it a temperature thing then, on top of sensory. My fella doesn't seem at all bothered by being too hot or too cold and I am the one worrying, just like you!

@Marie, yep, it is hilarious, especially when he is giving out about it at the same time :)

lol @Paula, probably. If you make it to Ireland check my profile photo first. Unless you look at me sideways like on your fab twitter avvy then I might not spot you either :D

@geeky, 'sunscream' that is perfect, going to steal that phrase :D

I think PJs is a fab idea! Mich x

Bronnie Marquardt said...

Oh I so relate to this. Mr 9 only has one pair of jeans he will wear - one pair! The others 'don't feel right'. And he refuses to wear jumpers and then goes to the office at school complaining he is cold ... I've taken to leaving a jumper there for him, so they know I'm not a bad Mum who sends her kid to school without warm clothing. As for bedtime, no pjs for him. He always has to wear his undies, regardless of temperature. I know he can't help his sensory issues, but it drives me crazy sometimes, funny little guy.

Hilaroius, I was wondering why he was on the trampoline in his pj's on Thu and Fri when I called over!!! I just never thought to ask you about it!!!! Poor HRH, he must have had cold anlkes too :)

Ohm, I so hear you!
When Aspie teen was small he'd be doing the nudie run in seconds after we'd battled to get fabric to cover his nekkid self lol.
He runs at a few degrees warmer than normal, always has done, it seems to be something ASD kids have in common with some car engines ;)

I hope you got the shopping done successfully! I am new to your blog, I followed a link from Fiona's blog (welcome to the mad house) and just wanted to say I am really enjoying reading your posts. Thanks!

Yup, my three-year-old is always naked/in his diaper, even when it was hailing outside. But I don't remember my 6 year old being one or the other. I think certain shirts bugged him, but nothing else, really. It's so hard as a mom when you have to consider their health and safety, but realize you're fighting a losing battle, lol.
good luck!

Naked in this house too!
The pj's are an excellent idea!

We have the same dilemma in my house.
My sister suffers very sensitive skin, can't wear sun cream and also complains of the heat... Sometimes you just have to do the best you can. :)

Hi! I am coming to you via Sandrine. My son is the Jacob she names in her 2065 post. I am so glad to have landed here, and am enjoying reading you very much. Come over to visit me on "The Squashed Bologna" sometime to hear about my family life w/ Autism (and ADD, too). For Jake it's all about a transition period. The first warm days he resists shorts and short sleeve shirts, because he has gotten used to the long all winter. Then in the cool days of Autumn we get the reverse, he's used to short now and resists long. I have found a few companies that sell very light weight cotton pants (usually called "beach pants") many with easy to roll up legs. We use these during the transition weather and it works well. I have long gone by a "don't sweat the small stuff" philosophy and this definitely falls into that "small stuff" category. I know it makes YOU feel hot looking at him in long pants on a warm day, but as long as he isn't keeling over from heat stroke or dehydrating from sweating buckets, let it go, like it seems you have. The only time I get into it is if there's a safety issue. Like when Jacob was 2 & he absolutely refused to wear a hat in the NY winter & thankfully we got him a coat with a good warm hood, and his ears didn't crack off. In anticipation of another royal battle, we started playing a "hat game" the next fall. We got him so into putting on a fun hat of mine that it backfired and for the next 2 years he would not leave the house WITHOUT a hat. Yes, there are 2 years of pictures of my son outdoors in a hat no matter what, and sometimes we had to wrestle it off him indoors, to put him to bed. Baseball or bucket hat in the summer, fuzzy or earflap hat in the winter. Don't get me started on the sandals. Sigh. With our ASD kids, everything is intensity times 10, isn't it?
