Update on walking problems

As I type, my poor little sweetheart, HRH, is sleeping on the couch. His gentle snores alternate with little mewling whimpers of misery because he has a tummy bug and we have been up, mostly, since 2 am. This is on top of his walking difficulty.

Last week I explained the problems he was having walking. Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to comment on that post, I really appreciate the information.

We were sent to the childrens hospital to have his hips x-rayed. His hips were fine, as were his blood tests (pause for a moment to imagine the screaming and four adults holding him down to take a blood sample *shudders*). The Dr.s felt that his hip joints were inflamed and a mild anti-inflammatory for a week should do the trick. That was last Thursday.

It hasn't. By Monday he was unable to walk, at all! For Monday and Tuesday I had to carry him, he couldn't take any weight on his legs. He improved a little yesterday and this video clip is from late yesterday afternoon.

I am not happy with his progress and was going to bring him back to see our Dr. this morning but now he has this tummy bug so I will wait until tomorrow. The one advantage of him having this bug is that he will get a lot of rest today. I might be stretching the sliver lining there, forgive me, that is called sleep deprivation!

Must dash, I have an overflowing basket of vom-scented laundry to do *sigh*

oh Jen darling how worried you must be
have your doctors explored "post viral myositis"
Apparently its a completely benign and goes away by itself though the inability to walk can last many days
My friend who is a doctor herself discussed this with another pediatriacian in front of me and that is how I learned about this completely harmless - but seemingly scary - situation

Oh Jen, really feeling for you all. Hope you get to the Doctors soon.

Hopefully you'll get to the bottom of this really soon, and that everything is back the way it should be!

Poor little guy. I hope the doctors get to the bottom of it as soon as possible.

Thinking of you and hoping all goes well.
If I could come and help with the washing I would do!

Aww. Jen, I feel for you, I hope you get to the bottom of it soon and the vomiting bug to deal with as well.
Hugs to you all!

@K-floortime, they did ask us about viruses at the hospital, but didn't mention this.

@Aspie, Dani, Christy & Trish, thanks :) He has been lying on the couch all day so at least he is not putting pressure on his legs/hips for the day!

@Brigid, ooohh I hope this bug doesn't run through the house!!

Thanks for commenting ladies :)

Aw Jen, as I said the other day on your original post I can't offer any advice but I can offer you a virtual hug :)

Poor little man looks exhausted on that picture, as you all must be. I hope he gets over his tummy bug soon and you get to the bottom of his walking difficulties.

Is that an iPad I spy him with on the video by the way?

no he doesn't look well does he. poor lad. Good luck x

Awh Jen the poor lil man.. He's really struggling isn't he.
I hope they find out what's up with him. Xxxx

Marylin said...

Aww the poor wee guy, he's not himself just now is he? Hope the doc figures out what's wrong with him. Think it could maybe be related to the tummy bug? Just a thought...
*hugs* x

Poor little guy. Really hope they find out what is wrong and treat it very soon. He looks exhausted.

Aw, poor little man. They look on his little face when his little sis goes charging by. He just has that "Show off!" look about him. Man these iPads must be amazing for our ASD kids.. Something to consider... and a Stomach bug to boot. Things can only go up from here.. I hope the doc gets his butt in gear and figures out what's wrong soon. None of you should have to suffer this way.

Bella @ If This is Motherhood said...

Aww. Please keep us posted! I wish I had some answers, but this one is a tough one.

Alysia said...

poor guy. I hope he feels better soon and you get some answers.

Oh Jen, this must be so frightening and frustrating for you. I do so hope it's what K-floortime, said - something non-dangerous that will clear up on its own. Because I'm sure the internet research you've been doing has been scaring the bejesus out of you.

Hope the doctors figure it out soon, AND that your little guy feels better soon and you get to leave the vomitorium AND that no one else in the family catches it. (Sorry, I know the odds of that last thing are slim to none, but one can always hope.)

That's so odd. My comment disappeared. I hope little man gets to feeling better soon. What a rough time for all of you. It can only go up from here. iPad is apparently the gadget of choice for our ASD kids. Something for me to consider. He looks so downtrodden when little sis charges past and he is still wobbling along. I hope doc get his butt in gear and figures this out.

Aww, poor thing. The hip issue must be worrying. Do they have any ideas why the hips were showing as inflamed??? Guess virus could bring it on.

Michelloui | The American Resident said...

Thats crazy--poor little guy and poor mum. Its so worrying when there's a mystery with children's health but hopefully the walking (hips) issue will just be one of Those Things kids get and it disappears soon. As for the tummy bug, well you're right, it will be a rest for him. x

Jen said...

@hatesocks, I can see both your comments :)

@Michelloui I like that, one of those *mystery* things kids get..........

@Scottish, they said it could be because he has been on a few different anti-biotics recently. It all sounds a bit vague to me though.

@Varda, see, I am still thinking positive and expecting it WONT go through the house, k? :D

@Alysia & Bella, thanks :)

@Spectrummy, he is wrecked and his walking is worse now than it was in that clip. He is back now to not managing to do it really, have ended up carrying him again today.

@SAHM, yes, that is an iPad, he LOVES it (as do I, when I get the opportunity to use it that is!!)

@Marylin & Elaine, thanks girls :)

Thanks for the comments, appreciate them and lovely to get some backup too. Have to keep reminding myself that I am not imagining it, that he really is having problems walking"!

I am so sorry to hear this and hope that it resolves soon. It sounds so much like a weird virus --

When I watch this I remember (how quicly one forgets!) that my eldest son walked like this for a few days because of some fluid in the hip joints.. it happened several times with long intervals and Sturla got the same though not as severe more than a year ago. It passed in a few days..the only worry was for it not to be infected so we had blood tests and stuff and spent a not so lovely evening at the hospital.
It was cleared from my mind until I saw your littler one limp around. Hope it will pass very soon.

Aww, what a wee soul! You must be worried sick. It's so frustrating when you can't get any direct answers from consultants. I used to work at a Children's Hospital. Keep pestering them until you get some answers. Hope the bug clears up soon. My wee one has had it all week too. Nasty gastro bug. Hugs ;o)

Poor you! Hope he's better soon so you can relax again (ha! did you ever get to relax before she asks herself??!) x

I wish you didn't live in ANOTHER country so I could come over and help out! I feel for you Jen. This is scary.

But on a lighter note! I love how Her Cuteness totally just breezes past him! What a slap in the face! And I love how he has to walk with his iPad. Just like his mum! Is that the one I got to play with???

TherExtras said...

Whatever is the cause of his walking-problem I hope it is short-lived also. I agree with the above about pestering, er, being persistent with the medical personnel. So long as he is not himself-in-motion there must be a reason - keep asking until he is better!

I do hope they get to the bottom of his problems soon. Whatever is up the doctors need to consider if letting him walk around may actually exacerbate the situation. Sorry Jen, i had to say that! Keep on their backs Jen 'til you get answers. I know you've had another hospital trip since this so I hope you are closer to a solution :-)

Thinking of you.

Hi Jen
I am just catching up on my blog reading, I am sorry to see things are so worrying right now. I just watched your video of HRH walking, it looks a bit like he has what is described as an ataxic gait. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ataxia to read more. I suggest getting an assessment from a neurologist. I am not a professional, or expert and certainly don't want to scare you more, but I have been looking into gait changes for myself due to my double vision and watched this the other day on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpiEprzObIU
it is possible that HRH's gait change is neurological in origin.
I am thinking of you and send huge wishes that you get to the bottom of it asap.

Lovely to hear from you.
